Direct answer: Before buying a used car, use LTA’s official enquiry services to check its private-hire-car history, and ask the current owner for the details required by the service. Treat the result as one fact to assess alongside condition, servicing, usage records and your independent evaluation.
This guide does not say that private-hire history makes a car unsuitable. It helps a buyer verify the history instead of relying on an assumption.
Use the official enquiry route
LTA advises buyers to check a vehicle’s private-hire-car or taxi history through OneMotoring digital services, including the Enquire Transfer Fee or Enquire PARF/COE Rebate for Registered Vehicle services. The public can also ask the current owner about the vehicle’s present scheme.
The Enquire Vehicle Transfer Fee form asks for an access code, the vehicle number and an intended transfer date. Ask the registered owner to obtain the access code through LTA’s Request Access Code service. Follow the current form instructions; do not ask for Singpass credentials or use another person’s account.
The vehicle’s current scheme and its past use are different questions. A car currently registered for private use should not be assumed never to have been used for private hire. Keep the official enquiry result with your purchase checks and ask the seller to explain any inconsistency.
Ask follow-up questions specific to the car
- What period was the vehicle used under the private-hire scheme?
- What servicing and inspection records are available?
- Are there invoices for significant repairs or replacement parts?
- What does an independent evaluator identify about the vehicle’s present condition?
- Does the proposed insurance quote reflect your intended future use?
A history result does not diagnose mechanical condition, establish future reliability or replace a pre-purchase evaluation. Our premium used-car checklist explains how to assess service records, evaluation scope and first-year costs.
Keep the vehicle facts separate
Compare the private-hire-history result with the vehicle’s VIN, registration information, service records and physical condition. If a detail does not match the explanation or paperwork, pause and ask for clarification before committing.
For the ownership-transfer stage, use our handover checklist to record transfer, insurance, documents and agreed work separately.
FAQs
Does private-hire history prove that a used car has a problem?
No. It identifies a past-use category. Current condition should be assessed with records and an appropriate evaluation.
Can I check private-hire history without the seller?
The transfer-fee enquiry route requires an access code supplied by the registered owner, as well as the vehicle number and intended transfer date. You can make the enquiry with those details. Asking only about the current scheme does not establish the vehicle’s past use; never request the owner’s Singpass credentials.
Should I reject a car with private-hire history?
Not automatically. Consider the verified history alongside the car’s condition, maintenance evidence, price, intended use and independent evaluation.
