Before driving away, confirm the correct vehicle, ownership-transfer status, valid insurance and road tax, agreed work and handover items. Record unresolved points clearly and ask for an explanation before accepting a handover document that does not reflect what you received.
Collection day should be the final verification of the purchase you agreed to. It should not be the first time you discover missing keys, unfinished work or uncertainty about transfer arrangements.
This collection-day checklist expands the handover section of our guide to choosing a trustworthy used-car dealer in Singapore. It starts after the purchase has been agreed; use the earlier guide for seller, quotation and deposit checks.
Prepare your agreed documents
Bring your purchase agreement and the written record of any work or items included in the sale.
Create a short list covering:
- Repairs or preparation agreed before delivery.
- Keys, remotes and accessories included.
- Documents you expect to receive.
- Any outstanding question about collection.
Keep the checklist specific. “Air-conditioning issue to be addressed” is harder to verify than a written description of the reported issue and agreed action.
This is a handover record, not a fresh negotiation over every aspect of the purchase.
Confirm the vehicle details
Check the vehicle against your agreement, including its registration number and identifying details.
LTA advises buyers to ensure that the physical vehicle’s make, model, engine and chassis details match its records. Ask for assistance locating identifiers if necessary rather than guessing.
Record the displayed mileage and collection date for your own handover file. If something differs from the agreement, clarify it before proceeding.
Verify transfer and driving prerequisites
Do not assume that payment or possession of the keys proves ownership transfer is complete.
LTA states that ownership must be transferred within seven days of a sale or change in possession. For transfer, the incoming owner must have valid motor insurance in their name covering the full period of the vehicle’s valid road tax. Confirm the transfer status through the applicable official process and ensure your cover is valid before driving.
Check road-tax validity as well. LTA specifically advises used-vehicle buyers to confirm valid road tax before driving the vehicle.
If any prerequisite is unresolved, ask what remains outstanding and how collection will be handled. Do not treat the seven-day transfer requirement as permission to drive without valid cover.
Check agreed work and included items
Walk around the vehicle with the representative and review the items on your list.
Where repairs were agreed, ask what was done and request the available supporting record. Check the relevant function where practical. An invoice or explanation and a working demonstration answer different questions, so ask for clarification if the evidence is incomplete.
Count the supplied keys and remotes. Confirm that accessories listed in the agreement are present.
If an item will follow later, record exactly what is outstanding, the responsible party and the agreed completion date. Avoid signing a statement that says everything has been received when it has not.
Understand the controls before leaving
Ask for a practical explanation of unfamiliar controls while the vehicle is stationary.
Locate the lights, wipers, parking brake, fuel-filler or charging-port release and other controls you need immediately. For an unfamiliar hybrid or electric vehicle, consult its specific operating instructions.
This short orientation is separate from a mechanical inspection. It helps you leave with a clear understanding of how to operate the car.
Keep one handover record
Retain copies of the agreement, receipts, transfer confirmation and collection checklist. Keep any photographs relevant to an unresolved issue with those records.
If a problem arises, describe the symptom, date and circumstances clearly when contacting the seller. Refer to the agreed documents rather than relying on memory.
Arrange collection clearly
For a purchase from Starbright Auto, agree the collection arrangements through your existing sales contact. Its website contact section provides a public enquiry route if needed. Ask which documents and items will be available at handover before setting out.
If you are still choosing a vehicle, start with the pre-owned car selection; this checklist applies later, once a purchase has been agreed.
FAQs
Do the keys prove ownership has transferred?
No. Verify the ownership-transfer status separately through the applicable official process.
Can I drive away before my insurance starts?
Do not drive without valid insurance cover. Confirm the effective date and time with your insurer.
What if an agreed repair is unfinished?
Document the position and discuss the next step before accepting a handover record that describes the work as complete.
Is collection-day checking a replacement for professional evaluation?
No. It verifies delivery against your agreement; it does not replace an earlier assessment of vehicle condition.
LTA source guidance checked 3 November 2026. Confirm the current requirements and your vehicle-specific arrangements before collection.
